To help large-scale storage system operators stay competitive in the evolving energy market, SMA Solar Technology AG has expanded its portfolio by launching the innovative Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery inverter.

SMA Solar Technology AG has bolstered its large-scale energy storage solutions with the introduction of the Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery inverter. Powered by advanced silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET* technology, this new inverter offers superior power conversion efficiency and grid-forming capabilities, making it an ideal solution for large-scale storage projects. After a successful debut in Australia, the Sunny Central Storage UP-S is now available to customers in Europe and the United States.

“Our storage solutions enhance system performance and support grid stabilization, playing a key role in building a more resilient and sustainable energy future,” said Joshua Birmingham, Head of Sales & Markets - Large Scale at SMA. “Since its launch in Australia, the Sunny Central Storage 4600 UP-S has generated significant interest from our customers. We’re excited to now introduce the battery inverter in Europe and the US. By combining advanced grid-forming capabilities with high efficiency, our solutions help utilities remain competitive and accelerate the energy transition."

Future-Ready SiC MOSFET Technology Ensures Superior Performance

At the heart of the Sunny Central Storage UP-S is its cutting-edge SiC MOSFET semiconductor stack, which allows for more efficient power conversion, reduced thermal loads, and the ability to maintain full capacity during grid-forming operations. This leads to higher power output and profitability for energy developers while also reducing infrastructure and maintenance costs.

Key features of the Sunny Central Storage UP-S include:

  • Continuous power of up to 4,600 kVA, with overload capacity for dynamic grid support.

  • Efficiency exceeding 99% due to advanced SiC MOSFET technology.

  • Reduced inverter count, leading to lower capital, installation, and maintenance costs.

  • OptiCool™ air cooling system for optimal thermal management in any environment.

  • Inverter-based inertia and improved short-circuit ratios to ensure stable power during disturbances.

  • Low harmonic values, ideal for challenging grid conditions.

  • Supports rapid, decentralized grid restoration, ensuring stable energy supply during outages.
