GHD Commits to Science-Backed Net Zero Target by 2050

Global engineering and sustainability consultancy GHD has taken a significant leap in its climate strategy, with its net-zero greenhouse gas emissions targets officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company aims to eliminate emissions across its entire value chain by the fiscal year 2050 (FY2050), aligning closely with internationally recognized climate science standards.
GHD’s commitment to sustainability has reached a new milestone with the validation of its net-zero targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally recognized organization that supports companies in setting emission reduction goals consistent with the latest climate science from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
“Our SBTi-validated targets take us beyond GHD’s previous goals of achieving carbon neutrality, with closer alignment to efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C,” said James Viray, GHD’s Enterprise Sustainability Leader. “Reducing the impact of GHD’s operations complements our global efforts to help clients achieve their own carbon reductions. Sustainability is integral to the way we work and to the way we serve our clients.”
GHD’s updated net-zero targets will prioritize tangible emissions reductions over reliance on carbon offsets—a critical shift that reflects growing expectations within the engineering and environmental sectors. Direct actions, such as improving energy efficiency, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and redesigning operational processes, will form the core of the company’s approach.
The new science-based targets will supersede GHD’s current carbon neutrality goals, which are set to conclude with the end of the current financial year (FY25). This transition demonstrates a broader engineering trend where firms move from offsetting to systemic reductions in emissions footprints.
Engineers and technical specialists across GHD’s global operations will play a key role in meeting these targets, employing rigorous process optimization, resource management, and lifecycle analysis methods to drive continuous improvement.
