The Istropolis District in Bratislava is set to transform into a vibrant cultural and residential hub, becoming the new focal point of Trnavské Mýto.

The redevelopment of Istropolis in Bratislava marks the beginning of a new era for the Trnavské Mýto area. Comprising nine modern buildings with residential and office spaces, as well as a landmark cultural venue designed to host up to 3,000 guests, the district is set to become a key destination in the city. Positioned strategically at a bustling intersection near a transit hub, the development integrates multi-functional spaces, including terraces that connect directly to the foyer areas of the cultural venue. The building's flowing façade, with media-integrated folding panels, links the venue to surrounding public areas, contributing to the district’s lively urban environment. In collaboration with CITYFÖRSTER, this competition-winning design reimagines the area’s potential and blends it with Bratislava’s broader urban narrative. The aim is to reconnect the site to its historically important role as a central hub, now rejuvenated with modern architecture and public spaces.

Once a thriving corner of the city, the area had seen a decline as infrastructure aged and the site lost its vibrancy. Now, Istropolis’ transformation seeks to reignite its former prominence, becoming a bridge between the city's rich past and its forward-thinking future. The redevelopment spans over 4.3 hectares of land, with a central plaza, green public spaces, and sustainable design principles. Car-free and pedestrian-friendly, the district will feature landscaped squares that naturally blend into Bratislava’s city grid.

The development includes a variety of building types, each serving a distinct function. From residential apartments with panoramic views of Bratislava to office spaces that promote well-being, the Istropolis District is designed for modern urban life. The cultural venue at the heart of the development is poised to become a "living room" for the city, boasting flexible staging for concerts, conferences, and cultural events, with a 3,000-standing or 1,800-seating capacity. The venue’s façade, adorned with media and lighting elements, is designed to stand out as a contemporary landmark in Bratislava’s skyline.

Public squares, such as the Event Square, Art Square, and Urban Square, are set to be dynamic, tree-lined areas for outdoor activities, from open-air concerts to casual dining. A "Green Courtyard" serves as a community-focused space, providing play areas for children and quiet areas for relaxation. Native plant species, sustainable drainage systems, and green roofs enhance the ecological and climate-adaptive aspects of the landscape. In addition, the district prioritizes energy efficiency, incorporating heat pumps, renewable energy sources, and smart energy storage solutions.

As part of Bratislava’s 15-minute city initiative, the Istropolis District is designed to ensure that all essential amenities are within walking distance. This approach aligns with the city’s broader vision of creating sustainable, accessible, and human-centered developments. Bicycle pathways, electric vehicle charging stations, and pedestrian zones also contribute to a reduced reliance on cars and promote a healthier urban lifestyle.

With its iconic architecture, green spaces, and sustainable design, the Istropolis District will become a vibrant new destination for both locals and visitors. The project reflects Bratislava’s ambitions for the future, merging cultural heritage with contemporary design to create a new urban landmark that represents both the everyday life and extraordinary events of the city.
