Sweco selected as partner in major expansion of light rail network in City of Helsinki
Sweco has secured a framework contract to be part of an alliance that will provide design and engineering services in the development phase of Helsinki’s light rail expansion.
This project is part of the city’s EUR 1.2 billion program to build over 30 kilometers of new tracks and transition into a rail-driven, carbon-neutral “15-minute city” by 2030. Sweco is contributing its expertise as part of an alliance to several key initiatives within a large-scale program funded by the City of Helsinki and carried out by Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd. The newest decision supports three new light rail lines: Vihdintie, Viikki–Malmi, and West Harbour.
“Sweco’s experts have worked alongside City Transport and the City of Helsinki on many alliance projects over the years, and we take pride in helping advance the city’s sustainable mobility agenda. We will offer a full range of multidisciplinary design services to the alliance and thereby aid Helsinki in its transformation into a genuine ‘15-minute city’ featuring environmentally friendly and efficient public transport,” says Thomas Hietto, Business Area President of Sweco Finland.
Sweco has long been a key partner in developing Helsinki’s light rail network. Its involvement includes urban planning, infrastructure design, and integrating new lines into existing neighborhoods with minimal disruption and high-quality standards.
As Helsinki’s EUR 1.2 billion program continues to evolve, the potential value to Sweco and other alliance partners will become more evident.
